Why painting is different in St. Louis
St. Louis is a brick city. On most of its older houses the brick is bare, and it is best left that way, because paint can trap moisture in soft old brick. The painting is in the wood around it: cornices, sashes, sills, doors, dormers and porches, often under many layers of old paint. Inside, the walls are plaster more often than drywall. Cracks, old patches and oil paint on the trim all have to be dealt with before a finish coat.
The weather does the rest. The National Weather Service counts about 35 to 40 days a year at 90 degrees or more here, and thunderstorms on 40 to 50 days. Winters freeze and thaw. Most local homes were also built before 1978, so the federal EPA lead-safe renovation rule applies to work that disturbs old paint. In a City historic district, the city requires a permit for exterior work other than painting wood trim.
How we work
It starts with a free estimate. We walk the job, measure and talk through colors and sheen. You get a written quote that lists the prep, the paint and the price. On the job we cover floors and furniture, then patch, sand, caulk and prime. We apply two coats, clean up and walk the finished work with you. Most interior rooms take 1 to 2 days. A full exterior usually takes 3 to 5 days, depending on weather.
